Dinah Devereaux, New Orleans-born slave and seamstress, suddenly finds herself relegated to a sweltering kitchen on the Natchez town estate of Riverwood. Having never cooked a day in her life, she is terrified of being found out and banished to the cotton fields as was her mother before her. But when she accidentally burns the freedom papers of Jonathan Mayfield, a handsome free man of color to whom she's attracted, her fear of the fields becomes secondary.
A gifted cabinetmaker, Jonathan Mayfield's heart is set on finally becoming a respected businessman by outfitting a bedroom at the palatial Riverwood—until a beautiful new slave destroys his proof of freedom and his fragile confidence along with it.
When the mistress of Riverwood orders Dinah to work alongside the sullen Mr. Mayfield, sparks fly setting the two on a collision course. Is their mutual love for God strong enough to overcome deep-seated insecurities and set the couple on a path toward self-acceptance and love for each other?

This book took me into another world and held me captive, I love reading about years gone by into the world of slavery and whatnot. I felt like I was right in the middle of it all holding onto every word and perhaps knowing that I have somehow been through this world of slavery as a slave myself or a plantation owner years before I was born in the 1950's.
I have read numerous other books written by different authors over the months and I never tire of reading about what the men, women and children went through while awaiting for their "Freedom" given to them and numerous others. I like to keep my reviews short and sweet. I've read reviews by others who tend to give away the whole story line in their reviews, after reading more than enough I tend to not be as interested as before in the book. I would recommend reading this book to my friends and others, I found it pleasing to my soul. Thank you for writing such a great book and I look forward to reading more from you Jacqueline Wheelock...

A Most Precious Gift edition by Jacqueline Wheelock Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

This story had me captivated from beginning to end. It was interesting to not only be told of the outward circumstances, but also of the inward dialogue we all carry through our lives, and how that dialogue can help or hurt us. Great tale from start to finish.
My favorite genre is historical romance.. This book is my kind of book. The character's, their development, and the storyline were expertly done. This was a clean, faith based story. Loved it.
I enjoy romance novels and generally have to skip large parts that are nothing but explicit sex scenes. This book gave the story without the trash. It had some surprises and had nice characters.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the main character. She is determined and knows what she wants, though currently frustrated by her circumstances. Though her past causes her pain, confusion, and doubt, she keeps on reaching for her dreams. I enjoyed each of the characters and the ways they interacted with each other. This story takes place in a difficult time in our history, but the author does a good job of showing the good and bad of the time. I look forward to the sequel.
An amazing story of faith, fear, hope, despair and what true freedom means, set in the plantations of the southern United States. I was immediately drawn into the story and the lives of the characters; hoping for things to work out in the lives of Dinah and Jonathan.

I loved the ups and downs of their relationship; the faith and fears. A beautiful crafted story. I highly recommend it to all who enjoy reading historical romances filled with faith!
I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. It is going on the list as one of my all-time favorites. A Most Precious Gift is a historical romance, but it is about much more than love. A story of sacrifice, yearning for freedom, and self-respect, this novel is by far one of the best books I've read. I would recommend it to anyone, even if historical romance isn't usually your genre. This novel literally moved me to tears at times, smiles at others. I can't wait to read Jacqueline's second novel, In Pursuit of an Emerald.
“A Most Precious Gift” exceeded my expectations. After learning of the storyline, I expected to enjoy it – but the setting, the characters, and the storytelling made me love it. Set in the old South before the beginning of the Civil War, freed slave Jonathan and slave Dinah meet in Natchez, MS when they work together – he as a hired furniture maker, she as a slave seamstress – on a project for Dinah’s owners. True to the history of Natchez, that county was the only Mississippi county that did not secede from the Union during the days of the Confederacy. Told from the perspective of two African-Americans, this story brought that time, and those situations, to life. Freedom was precious, and to gain it and KEEP it was the goal of every slave or former slave. But beyond the realm of physical freedom, the story centers on the fact that each of these characters must find for themselves true spiritual freedom which only comes from a relationship with Jesus Christ. Misunderstandings, danger, and sweet moments dominate this book that I could not put down. If you are fond of the likes of Tamera Alexander or Deanne Gist, you will love Jacqueline Freeman Wheelock’s “A Most Precious Gift.”
